Thrift Store Used Wall Decor Makeover

I am all about decorating my home on a budget. Everyone who knows me knows that I have never been a name-brand type of person. That’s why I love thrift store shopping! Not only is it budget-friendly, but it allows me to get creative, creating unique one-of-a-kind home decor pieces.

One great way to decorate on a budget is by using thrift store finds. You can find unique and interesting pieces that add character to your space without breaking the bank. Whether it’s art, furniture, or decorative items, thrift stores are a treasure trove of affordable decor options. And, sometimes, these finds can be used as is!

Phase One of the Living Room Decor Process

Since we just moved in, I decided to decorate one room at a time and share the process with you. My goal is to use all thrift-store finds for my decor pieces. And, for any furniture pieces, buy used and if needed, give the furniture pieces a makeover.

The only item that will not be from a thrift store is my sofa. I do not like buying used sofas. That’s just me, but you can certainly do so! Most of them only need a good cleaning.

Accent Color Choices

I found these curtain panels at my local Goodwill. They were not in the original packaging, but still looked new! Customers probably thought I was a little nuts because I was determined to find a rip or stain (haha). But as luck would have it, none! I paid $9.99 for two panels.

The colors were exactly what I was looking for! I am a huge fan of navy and light blue accent colors in a room. It makes the room feel inviting and warm, with just a little color.

Thrift Store Finds

The first project to tackle was the wall above my television. I needed to give the wall some pizazz! It was time to head to the garage and dig through my thrift store stash!

On a recent thrift store trip, I found these two ceramic flowers. Someone had painted them a light green, but at only $1.99 each, I knew I could make them into my style. So in the cart, they went!

I also found two wooden wall decor pieces (photo above) that were originally from Hobby Lobby. They did have scratches on the images, but at $2.99 each, it would be an easy DIY project. Paint can fix anything!

Combining these thrift store items would make perfect wall decor pieces!

Supplies

Dixie Belle Cotton and Yankee Blue Paint (or craft paint, it doesn’t matter!)

Paint Brush

220-Grit Sandpaper

Painting The Scratched Wall Decor

As you can see from the image below, the wall decor pieces had several scratches on the front where the black area is located. I am guessing that is why they ended up in a Goodwill bin.

The first order of business was to remove the scratches. I used a piece of 220-grit sandpaper and lightly sanded over the scratched areas. The scratches were surface scratches so it did not take much sanding to smooth them out.

I gave the wood portion of the frames (inside and out) two coats of Dixie Belle paint, in Cotton (white).

Painting The Ceramic Flowers

The ceramic flowers were painted a light green and white. This would not work with my navy blue color scheme.

I gave each ceramic flower two coats of my Dixie Belle Cotton paint, allowing the first coat to dry for about thirty minutes before applying the second coat.

Once the flowers were completely dry, I applied two coats of Yankee Blue by Dixie Belle allowing the flowers to dry in between coats.

Once the paint had dried, I took my 220-grit sandpaper and distressed around the edges, so that some of the white would show. I also distressed lightly around the frame edges.

Using my SureBonder industrial glue gun, I added a little hot glue for quick adhesion but to hold it permanently I used my Gorilla hot glue to the back of the flower. I then placed it on the backing.

The Final Navy Blue and White Wall Decor

I love the way this Flower Wall Decor From Thrift Store Finds project turned out. And, it cost me less than $15 bucks!

I also found this “Let’s Stay Home” wood wording at the thrift store and made that part of the overall wall decor aesthetic. My plan is to paint it the same navy blue.

Home decor does NOT have to be expensive. With a little creativity and determination, anyone can make their home decor using used thrift store pieces. And, keep in mind, that sometimes thrift store items can be used in their natural state, no paint or makeover needed.
